Last week I had the pleasure of meeting John Picacio. He is a World Fantasy Award-winning and Hugo Award-nominated illustrator of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. While we met briefly at the World Fantasy Convention, it wasn’t until Bad Moon Books commissioned John for the cover of my novel that we really got to know each other. We have been talking for a while now, talking about the emotions and philosophies at play in my novel, in order to add to the “stew” that informs his creative process. At Comic-Con in San Diego last week, John had his booth set up, and we had a chance to really connect. There were many amazing things going on at Comic-Con, ranging from the inexplicable trend of zombie romance to Annalee Newitz’s fascinating IO9 panel about transformative science fiction. However, the major highlight for me was just sitting with John watching everyone fixate on his extraordinary visions.
